Testing.
at 02:35:53
I got your message.
And I’m replying on my phone.
at 02:46:13
OK, looks like we’re ready for fifteen minutes in. :D
at 02:46:53
You are correct.
at 02:49:45
I added Auto Refresh Page to refresh every 15 seconds.
You have to pause it to comment or it will refresh your text out of existence.
at 02:52:29
How do I actually make an account here? I can’t find a link.
at 02:53:55
Oops. I may have removed it when cleaning up the screen.
at 02:54:57
See if this works.

at 02:55:09
Maybe if I give an email it makes an account? Testing.
at 02:56:53
Nope. The login page assumes you’ve got an account. What’s the “registration” page?
at 02:57:48
There is a link to make a new account. But I think I lost it.
The program does support it. I’ll see if I can find it.
It makes posting a lot easier. Not having to type zdl all the time. I mean, hairylarry.

Testing.

Hi, Barry. Welcome!
at 03:03:56
Hello Barry.
at 03:04:02
The picture has a man with a sax. The music is so far all drums. … And here’s the sax!
at 03:04:48
Are you listening Barry?
at 03:05:29
There’s a lot of percussion on this show.
at 03:06:31
I assume it’s meant to be a stream, but I’m not able to connect. Doing my best.
at 03:06:38
I like the bells.
at 03:07:10
https://www.kasu.org
at 03:07:51
There’s a big play button on the upper left.
That’s how I’m listening.
at 03:10:33
kasu won’t load, but I have the music playing!
at 03:10:43
I’m not going to be doing a lot of commenting today it seems. This isn’t the kind of music I generally listen to, so I won’t have any informed opinions on it.
at 03:11:01
Are you hearing drums?
at 03:14:14
OK, this is more like what I listen to. :D I guess I will be commenting.
But this is SERIOUSLY old-timey, no?
at 03:17:05
The vocalist is interesting. Careful use of fry at the ends of long vowels. She’s deliberately going off-note when expressing things like regret. And she favours closed vowels for stretching (oo) over open (ah).
That’s unusual, that vowel thing.
at 03:17:09
Marshall Allen’s album “New Dawn” was recorded in 2025. Of course he was 100 years old at the time.
Neneh Cherry is a punk rocker who also happens to sing jazz.
at 03:17:10
Sixties?
at 03:17:44
The sax is very breathy. Fits the melancholy mood.
at 03:17:59
Next week is more fusion with electric guitar. This week more free jazz.
at 03:18:40
Funky. It feels like she’s actually overlapping with her own voice somehow.
at 03:18:49
Wait, the Neneh Cherry who sang on Peter Gabriel’s millennium performance?
at 03:18:51
In the sixties Marshall Allen was playing in the Sun Ra Arkestra. Where he continues today.
at 03:21:02
Yes, it **IS** the Neneh Cherry who sang on Peter Gabriel’s thing. Swedish singer who sings with perfect English enunciation.
at 03:21:08
You may know more about her than I do. Her stepfather was free jazz pioneer, Don Cherry who played picolo trumpet.
at 03:22:09
Funky. It feels like she’s actually overlapping with her own voice somehow.
Probably overdubbed. Maybe effect. Maybe studio manipulation.
at 03:22:44
And by stepfather I mean the man who raised her from a baby.
at 03:23:53
I didn’t hear any overdubbing. Just phenomenal vocal control where she’s playing games. She’s one of my favourite singers, though I only know her from the harder side of things.
at 03:25:41
This is more like free jazz. Joseph Jarman, born in Poplar Bluff, founding member of the Art Ensemble Of Chicago.
On the podcast he’s playing a Sidney Bechet tune. So he can go back in time when he wants to as well.
at 03:26:39
I’d link you to the album, but apparently the URL has “banned words”. Not sure what’s banned, though. Let me try it one at a time.
at 03:26:55
I will have to listen to Neneh again. She’s definitely doing something and it may be with her voice.

wikipedia
at 03:27:09

at 03:27:23
OVO
at 03:27:43
I can probably change the banned words list. I never even thought about it.
at 03:27:49
I’ve never actually listened to much jazz. Kinda here because zdl invited me and I like trying new things. So I have very little to contribute aside from company and an outsider’s perspective.
at 03:27:58
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OVO_(album)
at 03:28:39
It was the h_ttp_s thing. It’s banned. Wow.
at 03:29:03
Break time!!!
at 03:29:24
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OVO_(album)
at 03:29:37
I don’t listen to a lot of jazz, but blues got me into this show and since then Larry’s taught me a lot about jazz.
(Still not a huge fan of the random jazz, though….)
at 03:30:06
My guess is that since you’re not logged in it won’t let you post links.
at 03:30:28
I’ve got to get that register button back.
at 03:30:44
We’re on again!!!
at 03:31:01
Anyway that’s the album she narrated/rapped for Gabriel on.
And … this big band stuff is EXACTLY the jazz I like best. Always been a fan of that era.
at 03:31:57
In the ’30s, were I alive, I’d have been one of the “Swing Kids”.
at 03:33:05
She’s still one.
at 03:34:09
I’d put zdl up against any swinger you could name.
at 03:34:43
Nope! METALHEAD ALL THE WAY!
And opera hound.
And ethnic folk fanatic.
And … you know what? I only like one kind of music really. Music that doesn’t suck.
at 03:37:36
The deliberate off-key of the soloists is something a lot of guitarists need to learn.
The most powerful compositional moments are when discord slips into accord. That catches the ear far more than just always being in accord.
at 03:38:01
This is pretty damn good.
at 03:39:16
Wait, is that a violin or are my ears untuned?
at 03:39:29
Marshall Allen – Boma
then
Sun Ra & His Arkestra – Journey Amongst the Stars
at 03:39:40
Might be a clarinet overblowing.
at 03:40:43
Boma was recorded in 2025 and definitely has free jazz elements. It is a big band chart.
Now Sun Ra.
at 03:42:13
This is going to be primarily percussion. I can tell.
at 03:42:38
https://virginiamacdonald.bandcamp.com/album/in-search-of
Virginia MacDonald gives a whole new meaning to jazz clarinet.
I’m sure you will like this.
at 03:44:20
This album was just released. Most of the tracks have been released in different collections but this is the cohesive session. Songs recorded together on their own album.
at 03:45:27
Sun Ra - Elliptical Orbits
https://sunramusic.bandcamp.com/album/elliptical-orbits
at 03:46:02
Ah. It was an overblown clarinet. Very … difficult. To put it politely. I was never able to get a clear tone out of overblowing a clarinet. A sax, rarely. A clarinet, never.
at 03:48:09
The Sun Ra Arkestra was often a big ensemble. It’s challenging to nail a particular sax solo to a specific musician.
I think the musicians at this session are known. There were other releases from the same session.
at 03:49:16
David is my friend on Mastodon, I was hoping he would chat with us tonight.
at 03:50:29
That’s part of my long term goal. Get a simple enough that I can get featured musicians to chat with us.
at 03:51:07
Barry is an old friend from online games, of all things. :D I invited him because I’m mean.
at 03:51:45
I also want to be solid enough to promote the chat to our local audience on KASU.
ZDL has been along for the ride and there’s been some ups and downs.
at 03:52:27
The guitar work here is … like … the anti-Neil Young. Virtuoso, but **quiet**, not the Young-style chaos goblin guitar.
at 03:53:27
Thanks ZDL for inviting him. Barry please come back. I love discussing the actual music we’re listening to.
And I am also a gamer. That’s how I met ZDL.
at 03:55:13
Yeah, and most of his music is more minimalist than this. You can actually get too minimalist for radio.
He has a high voice and a lower voice answering each other as well as a drone background going almost all the time.
at 03:55:56
He ran a site called Gamer+ that I had an account on and blogged on. He later made it a Mastodon site so that’s one of my two (gaming-focused in this case) Mastodon accounts.
at 03:57:11
I kind of lost the music a while ago, right now I’m here watching the discussion more than anything. And ZDL is one of the most astounding souls I’ve ever met, I’m glad you have her for your work. Beauty should be shared.
at 03:58:52
David Dellacroce – I Kept Recording Because Stopping Didn’t Seem to Clarify Anything
https://daviddellacroce.bandcamp.com/album/i-kept-recording-because-stopping-didn-t-seem-to-clarify-anything
Almost 46 minutes long.
at 03:59:14
Boy, that music sure sounds peppy.
at 03:59:43
That’s it for tonight.
ZDL did you have any bandwidth problems tonight?
at 04:00:54
No bandwidth problems at all, no. I can connect here without going through the backdoor so bandwidth problems are strongly reduced that way.
at 04:03:48
It was an honour to be allowed to join. Thank you Larry for hosting.
at 04:04:48
Yeah, everything is pretty static like old school html.
I am churning the refresh problem over in my mind.
I would like to have a one minute refresh that resets itself with any keystroke. So javascript.
Good thing Flat Press is GPL. It’s php and I have the source code.
at 04:05:17
Also I need to add the register option back. I really didn’t mean to lose it.
at 04:06:20
Thank you Barry. I could tell that you are a close listener. ZDL and I like to bore in on tiny details sometimes.
at 04:07:59
Anyone who really knows a topic will do that. I learn from it. Take care until next week.
at 04:08:27
When we’re done I can turn comments off for this post and … no spam.
That’s why I can get away with not needing to log in. The chat is only on when I’m here.
at 04:09:19
You too.
If you’re on mastodon I’m @hairylarry@gamerplus.org
at 04:15:30
That was a good chat and a good test.
